This Changes Everything
The documentary film This Changes Everything (2015) is looking at reinventing a different future using the most pressing challenge facing man-kind - climate change. It took 4 years of filming + nine countries throughout five continents to obtain a real world view of the biggest megatrends shaping our globe.
Inspired by the non-fiction book This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, the film points out the direct affect of capitalism on the climate and looks into the effects on cultures and livelihoods whilst portraying the root of the problem, ultimately and positively recognising actions that need to be taken.
The most refreshing aspect about the book and the film is the way Klein constructs her idea - that we can take hold of this existential crisis of climate change to convert our defeated economic structure into something profoundly better.
In her book, Klein argues the need to redesign our capitalist ways to free us from our addiction to fossil fuels; she sees the problem of climate change as an opportunity to tackle the problem of capitalism. Controversial and bold, furthermore the book does not go into the technicalities of climate change, however it is accessible and thoroughly researched, with an alarm bell highlighting clear and present danger that we keep distancing ourselves from.
